Starožitník Arthur Rainbow se přistěhuje do poklidné vísky, kde si okázale přestavuje staré rodové sídlo. Chová se jako typický zbohatlík: za každou cenu se snaží proniknout do poněkud uzavřené společnosti, která ho však přijímá více než zdrženlivě. Když se najde pod kostelní věží jeho mrtvé tělo, vypadá to zpočátku na nešťastnou náhodu, brzy je však jasné, že jde o vraždu. Do vyšetřování se na vlastní pěst pouští mladičký detektiv, spolužák syna inspektora Felse, který ve zdech starého opatství najde nejen vraha, ale i motiv rafinovaného zločinu.

Denn in dem Grab findet man nicht die Gebeine Treverras, sondern einen Toten, der keineswegs zweihundert Jahre in der Erde gelegen hat.
