Pojawiają się choroby roślin, wydawałoby się że ujarzmione przed wiekami, znikąd pojawiają się zmutowane zwierzęta – delikatna równowaga ekologiczna Majipooru zostaje zachwiana. Plagi, susze, epidemie wybuchają w coraz odleglejszych prowincjach – przeludnionej planecie grozi głód. Nikt nie podejrzewa, że za tymi stoją zmianami Zmiennokształtni. Lord Valentine czuje, że czeka go ogromnie trudne zadanie – musi zapewnić swoim poddanym żywność, uspokoić zbuntowane prowincje, wyprowadzić świat z chaosu. W dodatku pojawiają się samozwańczy Koronalowie, a stary Pontifex, podtrzymywany przy życiu tylko dzięki technologii, chce zakończyć żywot. Niepoślednią rolę w planach Valentine’a będzie musiał odegrać Hissune. Ale czy młodzieniec podoła obowiązkom?
