From 1867 to 1916 he recorded the geography and topography of South Westland, its ecology and conservation, at a time when this was scarcely known. This book is a revised edition of the 1957 account of Douglas by John Pascoe. A third of it details Douglas' life and the rest presents Douglas' own journals and sketches.
