Sam Verner, a leading researcher at Renraku Computer Systems in Tokyo, faces disgrace when his sister transforms into an Ork, leading to his transfer to the Seattle arcology. Sam's collaboration with the runners angers another passenger, security expert Alice Crenshaw. As Sam learns that the runners were manipulated into releasing a deadly virus within the arcology, he persuades them to help rectify the situation. However, they insist he join them, and while they succeed in their mission, Sam is compelled to shoot a security guard in self-defense. Despite the runners' warnings, he chooses to remain with Renraku. Set in 2050, the narrative unfolds against a backdrop where technology merges with human flesh, leading to brain-computer interfaces and the unexpected resurgence of magic after millennia. This evolution sparks the phenomenon of Goblinization, transforming humans into fantastical beings, while elves, trolls, and orks emerge.
