The story follows Richard Stewart, an aspiring rock-and-roll guitarist in the early '60s, who faced numerous challenges on his path to success. From enduring harsh treatment at home and school to navigating gang life as a Pachuco, he experienced significant adversity, including witnessing racial discrimination and fighting life-threatening forest fires. His college years brought further struggles, marked by extreme hazing. Ultimately, the arrival of the Beatles shifted the musical landscape, shattering his dreams of achieving national fame.
