The American Rhythm

Mary Austin recognized the looming threat to Native American myths and culture, dedicating herself to preserving their songs and poems through what she termed "reëxpressions." She emphasized the importance of the creator's life and environment in understanding the rhythm and meaning of these works, viewing tribal dancing as integral to the spoken or sung words. Her extensive research culminated in lectures and the publication of "The American Rhythm," earning her recognition as an Associate in Native American Literature by the School of American Research in Santa Fe.
