The narrative follows Hector Bradshaw, a sickly boy from Georgetown, as he is sent to the remote village of Tarlogie for a better life. His education is dry and colonial, while he is drawn to the captivating yet perilous nature surrounding him and the wisdom of the old hunter, Doorne. Ultimately, Hector's journey is one of self-discovery amidst a challenging and beautiful landscape.
