It was opened in September 1962, and the distance covered by the traveller taking this route is some 4,860 miles - an indication of the vast size of this great country. It is the second largest country in the world, only the U.S.S.R. is greater in area. In spite of its great size, Canada has a population of less than 20 million and this means that, outside the cities and towns, there are huge areas of open country.
