The Presbyterian Creed

Focusing on the historical development of the American Presbyterian creed, this study examines the impact of the Westminster Assembly's confessional tradition from its adoption in 1729 through significant schisms and reunions. It highlights the ongoing debates surrounding confessional subscription that fueled the Old School/New School divide in the nineteenth century, culminating in the reconciliations of 1864 and 1870. These reunions marked a pivotal moment where American Presbyterians achieved a long-sought consensus on confessional interpretation.
