The study focuses on the role of large woody vines, or lianas, in southeastern floodplain forests and their interactions with natural disturbances like hurricanes. It examines how these disturbances affect forest composition and structure, particularly concerning tree mortality and growth rates. Utilizing long-term research from Congaree National Park and Savannah River floodplains in South Carolina, the dissertation highlights the importance of understanding hydrologic and disturbance regimes in these biodiverse ecosystems.
