Texts and the Self in the Twelfth Century

Focusing on the development of self-identity in twelfth-century literature, the book examines Latin and vernacular texts that reveal subjective and autobiographical perspectives. It argues that the emergence of this medieval self is influenced by the divide between Latinity and vernacular languages, alongside a shift towards visual and spatial thinking. Unlike the proactive Renaissance self, this medieval self exists in a "space of agency," a concept explored through the lens of object relations theory.
