Set in the North Carolina mountains, the story follows Nancy as she takes a summer job at a Christian host camp, encouraged by her mother's former boss. Eager to escape home for the first time, she feels reassured by the presence of her cousin Tom. However, the daily letter-writing to her mother intensifies her homesickness. With the support of her dorm mother and the postmaster, Nancy navigates her emotions and the challenges of camp life, ultimately finding her place in this new environment.
