The story unfolds during a train journey from a Puja trip to Calcutta, where two travelers encounter a mysterious man whose confident discourse on various subjects captivates them. Initially perceived as an up-country Mahomedan, his profound knowledge and insights reveal hidden political tensions and forces at play in their world. His ability to quote science, Vedic texts, and Persian poetry leaves them in awe, leading one of the travelers, a theosophist, to believe he is endowed with supernatural wisdom or occult powers.
