The narrative follows Humphrey van Weyden, an intellectual who becomes a cabin boy aboard the Ghost, a seal-hunting ship captained by the brutal and cynical Wolf Larsen. Larsen, an individualist who despises human life, subjects Hump to harsh conditions while engaging him in intellectual debates. The arrival of poet Maud Brewster complicates matters, as Hump falls in love with her. Their subsequent escape attempt leads to their stranding on a deserted island, creating a backdrop for exploration of survival, love, and the human condition.
