The book examines China's varied responses to major interstate crises since the Cold War, such as the 1999 embassy bombing and the 2001 EP-3 collision. Utilizing primary sources and interviews, it analyzes the factors influencing Chinese leaders' decisions to escalate or de-escalate responses. Drawing on prospect theory, the author introduces a 'political survival prospect' model, highlighting how the severity of crises, domestic authority, and international pressure shape leaders' perceptions of their political survival.
