The North Yorkshire Moors Railway PreservationSociety today operates services along an 18 mileline between the village of Grosmont and themarket town of Pickering, travelling through theheart of the North Yorkshire Moors NationalPark and some of the most dramatic scenery inBritain with its landscape of huge skies above thelargest tract of heather moorland in England andWales. On selected dates these services areextended a further 6 miles along the picturesqueEsk Valley to the historic port ofWhitby.The line is a major tourist attraction carryingaround 300,000 passengers a year and the oldeworlde charm of the line's country stationstogether with the remote unspoilt scenery hasprovided the locations for much film andtelevision work. The hugely popular televisionseries Heartbeat' and the blockbuster HarryPotter' motion pictures being just two examples.Mike Heath has been visiting and photographingthe railway for over fifteen years and herethrough more than 60 new photographs in ahandy pocket-sized format, he captures the truespirit of the line, taking us on a photographicjourney along the route and highlighting thereasons why the railway can rightly boast tobeing the most popular heritage line in thecountry.
