Set against the backdrop of the Battle of Camperdown in 1797, the story follows Thomas Kydd, who faces the challenge of passing an examination to solidify his rank as acting lieutenant. From humble beginnings, Kydd must navigate the class distinctions of naval life while proving himself worthy among aristocratic officers. Accompanied by his mysterious friend Nicholas Renzi aboard HMS Tenacious, Kydd grapples with self-doubt and the pressures of his new role, striving to earn his place on the quarterdeck and avoid a return to a lower station.
