Rising labor unrest in China is examined against the backdrop of its integration into the global political economy, focusing on the conflict between the country's international aspirations and its restrictive stance on worker rights. The author analyzes how global labor movements have sought to enhance working conditions in Chinese factories through various strategies, including engagement with international organizations and support for local NGOs. Extensive fieldwork reveals the complexities of transnational labor activism and how China's strong state apparatus can hinder civil society's influence in global labor governance.
