The story is set in a rural welsh village Brynteilo, near the Towy estuary in the late 1950's. Its central character, John Prosser, is a gifted, well- meaning, young man, whose indolence and lack of self-confidence hamper his progress. He constantly requires a kick up the backside to get him to achieve some of his potential.
