Originating in the United States around 1870, pragmatism is a philosophical tradition associated with key figures like Peirce, James, and Dewey. Although its influence waned in the early 20th century, it experienced a resurgence in the 1970s, with contemporary philosophers engaging with classical ideas and further developing the tradition. Central to pragmatism is the pragmatist maxim, which emphasizes understanding hypotheses through their practical consequences, particularly regarding the concept of truth and a fallibilist approach to inquiry.
