The story follows Andreas Pum, a war veteran who, after losing a leg, finds solace in playing a barrel organ and marrying a widow. Initially content, his life spirals downward after a tram quarrel leads to the loss of his permit, marriage, and ultimately his freedom. This series of misfortunes challenges his previously unwavering belief in the kindness of those in power, prompting a profound rejection of his blind faith. The narrative explores themes of loss, disillusionment, and the struggle for dignity in a harsh world.
