The architect is inherently an artist, skillfully navigating the complexities of space while balancing the demands of physics and structural mechanics with creative vision. Rob Krier stands out as an exception, intertwining his passion for fine art with his architectural endeavors. He believes that fine art should engage with architecture, creating a dialogue that resonates with both occupants and passersby, prompting reflection. In his Pictorial Journal 1954–1971, Krier recounts the development of his dual passion for art and architecture, influenced by his upbringing in a family of artists and craftsmen. His early exposure to painting and sculpture, coupled with a fascination for Roman architecture, solidified his commitment to becoming an architect. Krier shares captivating stories from his school years in Echternach and his university experience in Munich, alongside his initial professional encounters with Oswald Mathias Ungers and Frei Otto. His autobiographical reflections are enriched with sketches, drawings, and sculptures from this period, showcasing the artistic manifestations of his diverse experiences.
