The Gunzenhauser collection Most of the more than 2.400 works in Gunzenhauser’s collection fall into the categories of Classical Modernism and Neue Sachlichkeit(New Objectivity) and were first-class art in his individual point of view. They include mainly works by artists such as Otto Dix, Conrad Felixmüller, Alexej von Jawlensky, Gabriele Münter, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Willy Baumeister and Horst Antes, as well as Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Georg Schrimpf, Gustav Wunderwald and Johannes Grützke. These works are a valuable addition to the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, which focus on the painting and sculpture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There is a long tradition of collecting contemporary art in Chemnitz, a city founded in the twelfth century by Emperor Frederick I “Barbarossa” at the foot of the Erzgebirgeon the main route connecting Franconia and Bohemia. The small town on the river Chemnitz soon developed into a centre of crafts and commerce.
