Set in a post-apocalyptic 2072, the narrative unfolds sixty years after the devastating scarlet plague has ravaged the population. James Howard Smith, one of the few survivors in San Francisco, faces his impending mortality while striving to pass on essential knowledge and wisdom to his grandsons. The story explores a starkly divided society, characterized by a hereditary underclass and an oligarchic political system, alongside the existence of commercial airship lines catering to the wealthy elite.
