This volume of "Agents and Actions Supplements" presents a challenge to editors, authors, and the publisher, aiming to complete it before the "International Symposium on Asthma and Allergic Diseases in Childhood" in Berne, Switzerland, from March 25th-27th, 1993. This symposium marks the 10th anniversary of the Swiss Association of Parents of Asthmatic and Allergic Children. The rising incidence of asthma and allergies necessitates attention from physicians, researchers, allied health professionals, and parents. While there have been no recent breakthroughs in understanding asthma pathogenesis or treatment, advancements in therapeutic approaches and public awareness are evolving alongside our growing knowledge of atopic diseases. Thus, the title "Update on Childhood Asthma" was chosen. The papers aim to summarize recent research findings, provide updates on therapeutic interventions, and highlight the psychosomatic aspects of asthma. The rapid pace of new research results means that the state of knowledge may shift even as this book is held. Fortunately, the goal of editing the proceedings ahead of the conference has been achieved, thanks to the timely submission of papers, quick publication, and the enthusiasm of the editors.
