The world is increasingly interconnected due to progressive globalization, diminishing national borders, and relaxed copyright rules. However, this openness has sparked a countermovement, manifesting in various forms such as barriers between the USA and Mexico, actions against online sharing platforms, and the rise of gated communities and neopopulist protest parties. Traditional defense strategies like barrier-building and counterattacks are inadequate for ensuring long-term security and prosperity; in fact, they may threaten these very goals. This exploration of defense strategies in the 21st century delves into how we can protect ourselves against complex modern threats, including financial market revolutions and the mental stress of an achievement-oriented society. Contributions from a diverse group of experts—such as historian Philipp Sarasin, immunologist Johannes Ring, the political think tank foraus, psychology professor Brigitte Boothe, and German footballer Christoph Metzelder—provide insights and answers.
