Cruise Line

Das anlässlich der Ausstellung „Cruise Line“ im NAK. Neuer Aachener Kunstverein entstandene Künstlerbuch (79 Seiten, schwarz-weiß) kompiliert zwei Essays vom Autor Mark von Schlegell und vom Medientheoretiker Norman M. Klein mit Arbeiten des Künstlers Simon Denny. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Kreuzfahrtschiffe, die hier als schwimmende Unterhaltungsfestungen fungieren, als Themenparks und selbstreferentielle Unternehmenswelt, sogenannte „scripted environments“ und konstruierte Realitäten symbolisierend. Cruise Line treibt dieses Spiel der Aushöhlung und Aufdeckung unerbittlich voran. Gehäuse, Hüllen und Oberflächen tauchen überall auf. Norman M. Kleins Essay widmet sich einem Archiv der amerikanischen Psyche zwischen Fakten und gestalterischen Irreführungen, der auf den Raum, der zwischen diesen beiden liegt, abzielt. Mark von Schlegell zitiert fiktive Überwachungsprotokolle der Reisenden an Bord der Magic und schafft dadurch einen Text, der nicht nur von Vorurteilen gegenüber Kreuzfahrtschiffbesucher berichtet, sondern auch Anspielungen auf die NASA über den Fall der Berliner Mauer bis hin zum Endpunkt von schablonenhaftem Dekor und sternenklaren Nächten. Klein, alongside works by the artist, Simon Denny. The main protagonist, the cruise line, stands in as the appropriate invention of floating entertainment fortresses, themed and self-sufficient corporate worlds assessed to illustrate topics of “scripted environments” and constructed realities. Cruise Line relentlessly plays this game of excavation and revelation; shells, sheathing and surfaces crop up everywhere. Norman M. Klein treats his essay as an archive of the American psyche, weaving in and out of fact and creative deceits with aspirations of arriving at a place conclusively between. Recounting the surveillance logs from visitors on board the Magic, Mark von Schlegell produces a cerebral text that covers topics from presumptions of the cruise ship customers to allusions of NASA to the falling of the Berlin Wall all above and below the terminals of templative décor and starry nights. Each book includes a set of four postcards.
