Margit Brehm describes Volker Hueller's work as a "Déja-vu experience" that "deceives the senses." This reflects the artist's exploration of painting's fundamental questions since the early twentieth century, particularly the interplay between abstraction and figuration, as well as the treatment of the painting's surface. Hueller has long incorporated extraneous materials into his paintings, such as foils, PVC, fake fur, and imitation reptile skin, which blend seamlessly into his compositions. This approach allows him to explore the relationship between ornament and abstraction while integrating the human figure into the overall artwork. Roberta Smith noted in "The New York Times" that contemporary German artists, including Hueller, adeptly navigate the balance between irony and sincerity, emphasizing that they need not be mutually exclusive. Smith praised Hueller for his delicate etching skills and his "amiable roughness" in painting, highlighting his ability to avoid exaggeration.
