A performance test design method and its implementation patterns for multi-services systems

Viac o knihe

In recent years, the telecommunication services landscape has expanded significantly, leading to a highly competitive market for network infrastructure-related services. Traditional telecoms are now leveraging Internet technology to offer a broader range of services, resulting in a surge in subscribers and service demand. This complexity has made performance testing of evolving telecommunication services increasingly challenging, necessitating more efficient and powerful testing solutions. The effectiveness of such solutions relies heavily on workload design and the optimal use of hardware resources during test execution. A key issue in performance testing is creating adequate workloads to evaluate system performance. Traditional workload characterization methods, which focus on requests per second, are inadequate as they fail to model traffic composition accurately. In these scenarios, users engage with the network through consecutive requests, or transactions, forming a dialog. Users may simultaneously request multiple services, exhibiting diverse behavioral patterns across different user groups. This thesis introduces a performance testing methodology that addresses these unique characteristics, comprising a set of methods and patterns to generate suitable workloads for multi-service systems. The methodology's effectiveness is illustrated through a case study on IP Multimedia Subsystem performance testing.
