Communication networks are essential to our daily lives, serving as a vital infrastructure that is constantly evolving. This evolution brings uncertainty regarding current and future network usage and traffic demands. A significant trend is the increasing interconnection of data and wireless networks with sensor networks, industrial communication systems, and ad hoc and femto-cell wireless networks, forming a vast internet. Additionally, new application-layer communication models, such as social networks, blogs, and user-generated content sharing, are emerging, initially proliferating on wired internet and now becoming accessible on mobile devices. However, the traffic patterns arising from these new interaction models, influenced by human behavior and social contexts, remain poorly understood, particularly in heterogeneous interconnected networks. Recognizing the critical role of communication systems and the rapid technical changes, this ITC Specialist Seminar aims to characterize network usage and traffic, which is crucial for the design, operation, and management of communication networks. Scheduled for October 8-9, 2008, in Berlin, Germany, the program features seven selected papers, five invited talks, two keynote addresses, and a panel discussion. Keynote speakers include Prof. Patrick Thiran from EPFL and Dr. Pablo Rodriguez from Telefonica Research, addressing topics related to network congestion and data transfers. T
