Common perception of women in wartime relegates them to the sidelines of history—working in munitions factories or waiting for their men to return. The truth is that much of the resistance to fascism should be chalked up to the people about whom official accounts having nothing to say. Partisanas excavates the history of women who planted bombs, shouldered guns, and were among the most active participants in the European Resistance. Ingrid Strobl is a well-known filmmaker, artist, lecturer, and writer. She makes her home in Cologne, Germany. Martha Ackelsberg is the author of Free Women of Spain.
