Ludwig Bittner (1877-1945), a prominent Austrian historian, led the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv in Vienna from 1928. He significantly contributed to the inventorying of his archives and the editing of the Imperial Register of Charles V. His work on contractual documents established a new auxiliary branch of early modern diplomatics, known as 'Vertragskunde.' Bittner's research is grounded in both unpublished and published materials, often found in various disparate collections. This extensive scholarly endeavor, spanning over twenty years, focused on official documents, with some findings published as early as 1918 based on the available source material.
