Siedlungsgeschichte und Hafenentwicklung in der Hansestadt Stralsund vom Mittelalter bis zur frühen Neuzeit

Viac o knihe

Excavations from 1996 to 1999 in the artificially raised harbour suburb next to the walled trading city of Stralsund reveal the historical harbour and its surroundings across eight construction periods from the 13th to the 17th century. Around A.D. 1267, streets leading to the water were established in the north and south. In the east, a wooden bank reinforcement with jetties was constructed, later replaced by stone in the 14th century. Harbour construction techniques were influenced by natural conditions and advancements in shipbuilding. Along the modern "Water Road" in the west, houses with smithies were discovered, one of which operated until the early 18th century. From the 14th century, wooden structures were replaced by stone gable houses, differing in orientation and construction from the merchant houses in the city center. The presence of pottery complexes, metal artifacts, and 865 wood samples facilitates precise dating of features. Evidence of iron and non-ferrous metal processing, shipbuilding, and fishing is found in the refuse. Geological, metallurgical, and archaeobotanical analyses, along with remnants of 13th-century Northern English coal, further enrich the understanding of this historical site.
