Structure-oriented exchange of product model data

Autori

Viac o knihe

Exchange of product model data between different CAD systems is key technology for enterprise collaboration and for the integration of computer-aided process chains. To overcome the current situation of shape-centred data exchange, a new exchange method for feature-based CAD models is proposed. As a key characteristic of a standardised model representation the author introduces the idea of structure orientation which aims at preserving the exact product shape while guaranteeing full alterability within the receiving CAD system. Two methodical approaches to structure-oriented model representation are identified. The explicit approach adds structural information to a hierarchy of shape models. The implicit approach takes advantage of the fact that the product model structure incorporates all essential information for model generation and modification. Data exchange can therefore be limited to a structural feature model and, apart from distinct exceptions, shape model representation becomes obsolete altogether. Implementation for commercial CAD systems is described. A cost-benefit analysis and statements from well-known companies underline applicability in industrial environments.
