This monograph examines the painter Friedrich Georg Weitsch (1758–1828), a key figure in Berlin's art scene around 1800, who later fell out of favor, a fate shared with his friend Schadow and many early Classicist artists. Weitsch was significant as a representative of the bureaucratic artist with an academic position. The author conducts extensive source studies to provide insights into the contemporary art scene, including academic institutions, art societies, collectors, and the daily life of artists. The traditional emphasis on Weitsch's portrait work is acknowledged, but the breadth of this study reveals his versatility; the thematic and typological analysis demonstrates his notable contributions to history painting, landscape, and animal art. The catalog of works includes around 580 entries, effectively doubling the previously known oeuvre and showcasing the artist's mastery across various genres. This comprehensive approach not only highlights Weitsch's significance in his time but also enriches the understanding of his artistic legacy.
