This case study deals with livelihood strategies of indigenous peasants in the northern Bolivian Amazon. It is based on anthropological fieldwork conducted during three months in 2002. The study results from an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Institute of Forest Policy and the Department of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Freiburg, Germany. It was carried out within the framework of the project Developing Institutions for Sustainable Use of Non-Timber Forest Products sponsored by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Using a Sustainable Livelihoods approach, it investigates the livelihood strategies of Cavineño Indians who attempt to convert their livelihood assets and capital endowments into positive outcomes in a context of high vulnerability.
