The four papers focus on seismicity and seismotectonics in the region. Carrilho et al. provide initial findings from the GEOALGAR project, launched in 2000 to monitor seismic activity in southern Portugal's Algarve region. Their results include relocated epicenters and fault plane solutions, revealing a more organized spatial distribution that may correlate with known tectonic features. The predominant fault plane solutions indicate strike-slip motion consistent with horizontal compression in the NW-SE to NNW-SSE direction. Yelles-Chaouche et al. conduct a detailed analysis of the 22 December 1999 earthquake in Ain Temouchent, northwest Algeria, which had a magnitude of 5.7 and resulted in significant damage, 25 casualties, and 25,000 people left homeless. They present an intensity map, surface features, and a focal mechanism derived from waveform analysis, identifying reverse fault motion with planes striking NNE-SSW, linked to horizontal compression in the NW-SE direction, a pattern typical of Algerian earthquakes. Buforn et al. examine the plate boundary characteristics between Africa and Iberia, from west of Cape San Vicente to Algeria, utilizing seismicity and source mechanism data to divide the region into three areas with distinct characteristics.
