IPMI plays a crucial role in the scientific calendar, convening leading researchers in medical image formation, analysis, and interpretation every two years for an international workshop. This event facilitates extensive discussions on innovative ideas, with many influential developments in the field first presented at IPMI. The 2003 edition took place over five days in July at St. Martin’s College, Bleside, situated in the picturesque English Lake District. Full papers were invited on all aspects of information processing in medical imaging, with a particular emphasis on submissions that explored generic mathematical or computational principles. Acknowledging the field's rapid evolution, a broad interpretation of medical imaging was encouraged, covering everything from macroscopic to molecular imaging and applications in patient care and biomedical research. By the February 2003 deadline, 123 submissions were received, each reviewed by four members of the Scientific Committee, focusing on originality, scientific rigor, and biomedical relevance. The Paper Selection Committee chose 28 papers for oral presentations and 29 for posters, but due to the high standard, many excellent papers had to be declined.
