EDBT 2000 marks the seventh conference in a series focused on advancing database technology, with this year's special theme, "Connect Millions of Users and Data Sources," highlighting the critical role of databases in the emerging information age. This significance arises from the convergence of communications, computing, and storage, as well as the independent relevance of database concepts for today's distributed information systems. The volume contains 30 research papers selected from 187 submissions, showcasing advancements in database research, development, and applications. Additionally, the program features six industry and applications papers, a panel discussion, six tutorials, and several software demonstrations. Three distinguished invited speakers contribute to the conference: Ashish Gupta discusses database issues in electronic commerce, Stefano Ceri addresses the impact of XML on databases, and Andreas Reuter shares insights on new perspectives in database technology.
