Catalogue of the Hepaticae and Anthocerotae of Sub-Saharan Africa

A synthesis of the published records of the Hepaticae and Anthocerotae of sub-Saharan Africa is presented. The area encompassed corresponds to the Index Muscorum (Wijk et al. 1959-69) regions Africa 2 and the mainland part of Africa 4. The list is arranged in alphabetical order of genera and species, and an exten- sive synonymy is given. The catalogue incorporates for each of the currently accepted taxa, at least one literature reference for each of the countries in which it has been recorded. Approximately 39 current species and sub-taxa in 5 genera of Anthocerotae, and 674 current species, 13 subspecies and 19 varieties of Hepaticae in 122 genera are listed, together with more than 50 species names whose status is unclear.
