Despite its significance among Symbolist, Naturalist, Expressionist, and New-Objectivity printmakers in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Germany and Austria, the print portfolio as an art form has not been thoroughly explored in English-language literature. This investigation is crucial due to the portfolio's role in shaping a new audience for German and Austrian art from the 1890s, its function as a response to the economic and political upheaval of the 1920s, and its reflection of personal and public concerns across various domains. The examination focuses on the portfolio's impact on German and Austrian graphics, utilizing examples from the David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art and the Marcia and Granvil Specks Collection. Featured works include Naturalist series by Lovis Corinth, Expressionist pieces by artists of Brücke, Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, and Oskar Kokoschka, along with New-Objectivity and Realist contributions from Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Rafaello Busoni. The portfolios showcase a variety of print techniques and encompass themes ranging from political and social commentary to literary and musical references. Essays delve into media choices and the broader implications of these portfolios, highlighting their diverse stylistic paths and cultural significance.
