Numerical simulation of oscillatory convection on low Pr fluids

Viac o knihe

For the past decade, there has been a growing recognition of the significance of fluid motion and transport processes influenced by buoyancy across various scientific and technological fields. Notably, extensive research has focused on the oscillatory behavior of metallic melts (low-Pr fluids), as these flow oscillations critically affect the quality of growing crystals, semiconductors, and metallic alloys for advanced technology applications. In 1987, the organizing committee defined test cases on 2D oscillatory convection in differentially heated cavities containing low-Pr fluids and presented them to the community. The GAMM-Workshop, held in October 1988 in Marseille, France, brought together 55 scientists from 12 countries. Twenty-eight groups contributed to the mandatory cases, with participants from France (12), other European nations (7), and the USA, Japan, and Australia (9). Several groups also explored related issues, such as accurately determining the threshold for the onset of oscillations, the thermocapillary effect in open cavities, and 3D simulations. Findings included period doubling, quasi-periodic behavior, reverse transitions, and hysteresis loops for high Grashof numbers in closed cavities. The workshop welcomed additional contributions from experiments and theoretical analyses (stability and bifurcation). The book details the various methods and specific results from each contributor.
