Gleason's journey began in 1906 when he was commissioned to illustrate Thoreau's writings, leading him to explore and document the exact locations described by Thoreau, preserving their original beauty. His deepening passion for the project resulted in a collection of images, most of which were selected by Gleason for a planned edition of Walden that ultimately remained unpublished.
