In Indian Territory

Set in the early 1900s, the story follows Lew, a young lawyer pursuing success in Indian Territory. He encounters Sam, a Creek Indian in jail, who offers a portion of his tribal land allotment as payment for legal assistance. Although the land is only forty acres of unproductive scrub, this transaction highlights themes of desperation, cultural intersections, and the complexities of legal and personal relationships in a changing America.
