Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Yorkshire, this trilogy follows Tom Brocklesby, a young miner who begins his career at 12 and aspires for a better life through education. His relationship with Gertie Holdsworth develops amidst the challenges of the Bag Muck strike and its aftermath. As Tom trains in London, he faces new experiences, while Gertie contends with personal challenges. The narrative culminates in the tragic Cadeby Colliery disaster of 1912, intertwining fictional characters with significant historical events, enriched by the author's familial oral history.
