"When at thirteen her sister gets pregnant and her mother is having yet another baby, Sharon Desjardins becomes even more determined to finish high school, go to Toronto, get an office job and find a husband. She rejects the local boy, Clinton McClary, who loves her, because he quit school after grade eight to help his family. In Toronto, she marries a well-to-do lawyer, Jack Sutter, whom she likes, but doesn't love. She realizes her error and wants a separation. Jack convinces her to take a trip to Paris but that only leads to Sharon realizing what true love is. They return to Toronto and Sharon leaves him."--
