Critical Catalog Rembrandt, the most famous artist of Holland's Golden Century, was a great draftsman—but so were numerous of his pupils and assistants, who could, of course, not escape their master’s formative influence. Not only did they draw the same motifs, they even did so in his style. This soon led to confusion, and works made by Rembrandt’s assistants were often mistaken for the master’s own, most of the drawings in his style being considered works by his hand. In the last few years, however, this assessment has fundamentally changed. Many of the sheets once attributed to Rembrandt are considered today works of his pupils and assistants. This publication complements the 2006 catalog of Rembrandt’s own works from the world-famous part of the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett; it documents the drawings now attributed to pupils such as Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, Ferdinand Bol, Willem Drost, Arent de Gelder, as well as anonymous masters. The exclusion of these works from Rembrandt’s oeuvre and the attribution to other artists is the result of a knowledgeable examination of the complicated history of these drawings. More than 150 drawings are critically discussed in individual contributions.
