Abstract This paper reviews literature on using Virtual Reality (VR) technology for maritime training purposes. Most applications are 3D in modelling, but not 3D in viewing. The field of published VR applications for maritime training is still small enough to be reviewed in such a paper, with few applications in commercial shipping with the notable execption of the well-established nautical simulators. The high costs fpr VR based training limit applications. Busienss cases usually appear when large assets or human health/life is at risk in real-world training.
