Pauline Kraneis is a drawing artist. Her works are about not only spatial fullness or void, but also the loud world and the need for silence. It is only in the pause that music emerges from the noise. On the creation of music, Miles Davis is quoted as having said: ‘It’s not the notes you play, it’s the notes you don’t play.’ The pause that is the air to breathe; the silence that is the space to listen to the music. Music describes time and draws an arc between memory and expectation through which we move with the music. This movement through time – the past, the present, and the future – can also be found in the works of Pauline Kraneis. We need the gap in space, like the pause in music, so that a connection can take place and we can recognise it as an event. (Alice Goudsmit)
