Cultural identity is not only a political matter, but entails every aspect of daily life. As everywhere, colonialism in Nigeria is viewed as a distortion of genuine socio-cultural system. Colonial politics contributed to the fall of social and moral values so that corruption, for example, is viewed by political opportunists as a normal way of life. This is one of the reasons why the social-political configuration of modern Nigeria has little recognition by the indigenous people. Through this work, the author, using the ethnic Igala people, succeeds in proposing answers to the question of a sensible national politics which put historical and traditional institutions of the various ethnic hegemonies into consideration: What are those things required for a fruitful and peaceful co-existence in a multi-ethnic society like Nigeria?.
